Art, art, art.

Hi guys,

Sorry I haven't posted in a millennium, I just haven't had much to talk about, and I really haven't had the time this term. I've got lots of assignments coming up and of course homework and I've been getting back into Tumblr so of course as soon as I get home from school all I want to do is go on tumblr. So much so that tumblr is all I do until I go to bed, I don't even give myself time to watch the movies and tv shows I want to watch. But tumblr is really great, if you're old enough to get it, get it. There's so much great stuff out there. If you're not sure what it is (don't worry I didn't understand what it was at first either) it's like Pinterest I suppose, a little bit. You can upload your own content, upload content from different sites, or just re-pin (or reblog in this case) content from other people. In tumblr you have a blog, so unlike Pinterest you don't have boards, but that doesn't matter because sorting it out isn't really the important bit although you still can by #tagging 'posts' (like 'pins') and from there you can either look up things that are also #tagged and and see what other people have posted using that #tag. Some 'themes' (like a 'template' on a normal blog, it changes the style of the blog and you can download hundreds of themes straight from tumblr or online, some cost money but a lot of them a free and you can further customise the look straight from your blog - just like any normal blog) will allow you to create a page with all your tags, so people can find posts on your blog with just that tag. You can also of course 'like' a post rather than reblog it onto your blog. Anyway where was I, oh yes, I probably made the whole tumblr thing sound a lot more complicated but basically I go on there to see content that makes me laugh. My favourite blog at the moment is my friend's blog which has some seriously hilarious stuff. Be warned though, she posts a lot of fandom stuff; she posts a lot of generally hilarious non-fandom stuff too but I would follow her if you are at least interested in a few of these things: Supernatural, Doctor Who, Merlin, Sherlock, Marvel, Harry Potter, and these days, Friends. But I would say that about 50% is non-fandom so check it out anyway. I've discovered that the more people you follow, the more content you will find and so therefore if you just follow, follow, follow, hopefully your dashboard (like your 'feed') will come up with lots of good content once in a while. Sometimes it's all about chance. I mean, you can never see it all, there's just too much and you'll never get through it all, so you just scroll down for a while and then you stop. Sometimes you see good stuff, and sometimes you miss good stuff, but if you follow similar blogs, then things will usually show up again if you missed it the first round. Wow this is going to be a really long blog post. Well okay I'll get on with it then, my blog is filled with "pretty" pictures I guess. Photography, food, art, fashion, etc. I've been trying to put up more text posts as well like quotes and poetry. I may use some quotes I put up on here before. Anyway please check it out.

Okay so now we move onto the 'art, art, art' part of today's post. Recently we had to watch Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho' in English and then create a speech on why it is a classic film. We also had to bring in a prop for this speech so I did two A3 drawings. Now if you've watched Psycho you will understand what I have done to these pictures. If you haven't, I will explain. I have swapped the two characters around. Normally Marion (the woman) is in the other picture, surrounded by the rounded picture frame, the lamp, and the phone etc. Whereas Norman (the man) in the film is surrounded by the sharp picture frames and the owl. My reason for doing this was to show the importance of mise-en-scene, lighting, and acting in the parlour scene. Now I'm not going to go into detail because you probably don't really care unless of course you are an English teacher but here are my drawings:
Unfortunately I could not get an image of the camera looking up at Marion so she looks a bit out of place there. Like she been stuck on or something, but oh well. I used a combination of pencils, progressos, and charcoal. Plus this really useful blending stump which is absolutely wonderful in creating smooth textures like in Marion's dress. If you are a serious drawer I suggest you get one of these, it will change your life! It was absolutely perfect in creating the dress where I didn't want to see the pencil lines and I wanted to give the shadows a soft, blended look. See if your local art store sells these and if not, you can probably by them online.

And last but not least, I recently have been getting interested in Tom Hiddleston (shhhh!) and so that has made me a little less obsessed with Johnny Depp ( :O ), yes, yes, I know, I thought Johnny Depp was forever, but as it turns out, obsessions pass, well, at least when another obsession takes it's place, which in my case, is taking the form of Tom Hiddleston. Although I don't find him as attractive as I initially found Johnny Depp, he is much younger (sorry but Mr Depp is like over 50 now) and I think he is a really good actor, so even if he wasn't so gorgeous, I'd still like him as an actor. He kind of sounds like my English teacher though (I think it's the Shakespeare) and he's always so happy it drives you to the point of suspicion (thank you Tumblr for beautifully wording that) but anyway this isn't about Tom. My point is that I could never draw Johnny Depp while I was obsessed with him because I would probably scold myself for the slightest imperfection because it would not do him justice. So now that I wasn't obsessed with him, I decided to draw him, and it didn't turn out too bad. Sure it isn't perfect but that doesn't bother me like it would have before. However I cannot draw Mr Hiddleston because he has found himself in the position of being utterly perfect and therefore too much of a task to draw. So maybe one day when the obsession fades I'll draw him as he is now (33, ridiculously tall and skinny, a massive smile which is both uplifting and kind of creepy, and impossibly happy).
I don't know why I find myself attracted to these two men. The only similarity I can find is their outrageously good cheekbones. Other than that, different eye colours, hair colours, hair styles, build and figure, face shape, accent, and of course, completely different actors. Sorry the printer makes the drawing look a bit washed out, no not washed out, like there is a really bright, white, light glowing from it. And grainy too. Do you know what I mean? It did the same with my Merida drawing.

And my god, can you believe we are in the eighth month of 2014 already? Where did the time go? 2014 still seems like a strange word to say. I can't believe by birthday is like 2 months away and that I am more than halfway through Year 10 which means Year 11 next year!!! Honestly does anyone else feel this way? It feels like time just moves too fast. People say "oh thats a few weeks away" and I think "What? A few weeks?". 12 hours of daylight just seems to short, 7 days in a week seems to short, 52 weeks in a year seems to short, and all of a sudden I'm worrying about how fast my life will be over. If you have anxiety and you are reading this, I apologise, I don't mean to make people anxious it's just, well, this is how I feel. That time is just racing by and there's nothing you can do to stop it, or slow it, or pause it. For example this post took like 1.5-2 hours to type up. How? Waiting at the bus for 15 minutes feels like 2 hours for most people but it feels like 15 minutes for me which doesn't feel like much at all. Anyway enough rambling, hope you all have a wonderful happy day and oh! I almost forgot. Apart from checking out the 'People Helping People - The 8x10 Show' today is your last chance to check out Michelle Morcos' (whom I've mentioned before) solo exhibition 'the nocturne 528' @ the Christie Cotter Gallery, Camperdown. The show closes at 6pm but there is an artist talk at 2pm so if you're just lounging about today check it out! Here is Michelle's blog.

Well that's all for today. Hope you enjoyed that and I'll see you next time!

Jody

P.S. You may have noticed this post has changed. Just telling you so you don't think it's not loading properly or something. So basically this post should just be called 'Art, Art' but that sounds a bit lame... Anyway, hope you did check out the Red Cross exhibition though and hope you have a great week!

Finally finished Merida

Well, you may remember the Brave poster I drew back in April 2012, well I lost it at one point, then I found it, then I put off finishing it off. But today I finally decided to finish it because I didn't want to look back on it and regret not finishing it so maybe I'll get back into drawing again... If I can find anything I want to draw...

The scanner made it really really bright so some of the colours look a bit fluoro but oh well.

If you have any suggestions for me to draw please let me know either here, on my tumblr or on my twitter. Remember I drew this 2 years ago so my drawing skill may be slightly improved since then. Then again maybe not much. Even though I didn't execute the drawing very well I'm still proud of it since I don't often draw and I only started drawing in colour a few years ago.

I'm so sorry I didn't post any photos of the Easter Show and I haven't posted for ages but the longer I I didn't post the more nervous I got about posting as I'm sure if you are a blogger you can understand. Plus I didn't really have anything interesting to write about but hopefully when I've gotten myself sorted there will be more blog posts. And if it's any consolation, the Easter Show this year turned out to be not as fun as I was hoping for it to be. We ended up not going on many rides. It's really hard when your going with a large a group of people because everybody wants to do different things and sometimes you have to do things other people want instead of what you want. Anyway, hopefully the next time I go it will be more fun. Well anyway, on Sunday I went to a painting workshop at the Art Gallery of NSW held by painter Peter O'Doherty. He was very nice and even though painting isn't my strong point I still got through the day and had fun. Well I'm not a very good painter but here is one of the things I painted
Although I wasn't very good at it and I was in a room full of older women who were practically proffessionals in comparison, I have been inspired to do some more painting of my own and so this afternoon I bought some canvases and brushes and this weekend I'm going to get some more acrylic paints.

Well on the agenda for this month is a four week workshop at the Museum of Contemporary Art at Circular Quay. It is on Thursdays starting this week and I'm slightly nervous but king of excited at the same time. I don't know what we will be doing but apparently "Teens will experiment with unconventional approaches to expressing their creativity whilst applying contemporary techniques and concepts using a range of unusual materials" so I am slightly curious and nervous about that.

Then I've got Work Experience which everyone in Year 10 must do. Don't get me wrong I want to do it but I've been having trouble finding a place. I don't think I'll be able to find a place that is in the same kind of career path I'm thinking of for the future so I might just have to work at a local business which I don't mind it's just a shame is all.

Also, I'm excited for Maleficent which has come out now and I plan to watch it with my cousin. I don't want to get too worked up about it though otherwise I may get disappointed coming out of the movie. I will probably enjoy it more watching it with my cousin though :) What movies are you excited for? Do you have someone you enjoy watching movies and spending time with?

Anyway that's all from me, hope you've all been having an okay term. My half yearly exams ended last week so thank goodness for that. I hope if you are a student that you did okay in your exams or good luck if they are coming up! Other than that, be happy, be merry, be whatever you think you should be, remember, smile and the world smiles with you so lift your chin up and enjoy the day. Don't wish you had done things different, just do them now.

Lots of love,
Jody xoxo

Art Assignment - My Parody of The Persistence of Memory

Hi guys,

So not yesterday but the Sunday before I started the practical part of my art assigment. Which was to take a surrrealist painting and change it. So I took The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali and changed it. If you don't know what I'm talking about, here it is:

At first I got the idea from the stopwatch with the ants on it. I thought, ants, ants eat food, food, it look like pizza. Then I looked at the rest of the stopwatches, and I thought they kind of looked like those soggy cheesy pizzas you see on TV. So I decided to just make all of the stopwatches pizzas. When I looked at the that white, drapey thing, for some reason I just thought it looked like the shape of a couch. Well, the top bit anyway. So yeah that was pretty much my inspiration. I tried to make the box thing in the corner look more like my desk, so I added a notepad and I changed the tree into those little wooden mannequin things. I'm glad I could finally use my pastels that I got for my birthday a while ago. Although I have no doubt someone has already thought of this kind of appropriation, I'm still proud of my work and I hope I've done as well in the theory part! :/

Development Stages...

The End Result

Well I hope you like that, sorry if the images take a really long time to load ;D If the fonts on the blog don't load properly just refresh the page and it should fix itself up. I need to start doing less posts with photos in it I think :)
Also, I'm sorry there hasn't been any fashion sketches for weeks, I'm not sure whether to keep going with that or not. I do want to but as you know recently i just haven't had time but I might start it back up again next week but I don't want to get your hopes up just in case nothing happens.

Monday Fashion Sketches #12

Hey guys,

Well I almost didn't make it in time but at 9:13 at night here they are! Four fashion designs for you this week! I've tried out my new Extras kit and they've got some pretty cool stuff in there. Not all of it's good but some of it is. Anyway here you go. Also congratulations to Mathew McConaughey for best Male Leading Role in 'Dallas Buyers Club' and the wonderful Cate Blanchett in 'Blue Jasmine'. The winning movie of the 86th Academy awards goes to '12 Years A Slave'. I actually haven't seen any of these movies but I'm sure they're all good. Well Done. I may be posting some red carpet favourites tomorrow. Hope you don't think it's too late.
This hairstyle looks very birth of Venus don't you think?

Sorry the pictures are each on separate lines and sorry the colour is so bad. But I hope you like them anyway

Monday Fashion Sketches #11

Hi guys,

Today's designs are a bit different from the usual.
Yes, it's pretty obvious, they're not in colour. This was an experiment in trying to free-hand draw rather than using the pattern pieces. I think it's nice to try free-hand once in a while. I find I can let loose and not worry about getting the lines perfect and I can just experiment and freely express the kind of shapes and textures I want.
So here it is, I hope you like it.

We're almost at present-day designs now so I'll have to start actually drawing every week now :)

Monday Fashion Sketches #10

The design on the left was an experiment with coloured pens. The right hand design is a casual and modern outfit for young adults.
The overalls kind of failed because I couldn't really see the lines and I'm not sure if the colours are right but I the intended affect was for it to be cute and colourful. I think the one on the right was meant to be more sophisticated.

Monday Fashion Sketches #9

Yeah, the one on the right is definitely not a favourite of mine although I do like the sunglasses. The one on the left is kind of a girly playsuit.
The one on the left is a modern, casual, summer outfit whereas the on the right is kind of retro

Monday Fashion Sketches #8

There are only 3 for you today as there is an uneven number
You may notice that the costume on the left is heavily based on the Italian Carnevale character Arlecchino but I like it as kind of a fun carnival/circus type dress.

Monday Fashions Sketches #5

Hi guys, time for my weekly fashion drawings again. If you haven't seen my previous posts then I will fill you in now that I am not that good of a drawer I use a template from the My Style Studio kit from Klutz
Yikes, okay so the one on the right isn't my most proudest designs and I apologize for that but I think that's the worst of it.
I think i was going for a simple 60's look here......
 or one of those eras...

Monday Fashion Sketches

Hi guys,

I've decided to make the fashion sketches a weekly thing (I'm serious this time) on Monday. I hope you like them!

Oh and in November my 'My Style Studio Extra Stuff' came through and so I've had new designs and textures to work with! You won't see them for a few weeks though as we are still catching up on my older designs.

The one on the left looks a bit strange because I didn't know what hair to give her and then I forgot about it and when I realized it was too late because I had already gone over in pen.
The one on the right is one of my favourites. It's like a 70's or 80's (I don't really know) jumpsuit thing with some modern jewellery and bright colours. The one on the left looks a bit strange because I had to hand draw the cap and it's not very good.

Another four designs next week!

Fox drawings

Browsing the web the other day and came across some cool fox studies and how to draws, as well as logo-like designs

It kind of looks like a kangaroo to me ;D

I found these 'how to draw's a while ago but I thought I should share them because there's nothing nicer than being able to confidently draw an awesome fox. A feeling which I do not yet know...

My Fashion Designs

If you don't have My Style Studio by Klutz then I definitely recommend you get it!

It is the easiest tool for drawing your own fashion designs as you will ever come to. You just stick the ready made designs onto the model template. Then put on a sheet of already cut tracing paper and trace your design. It's so simple and so easy to use.
At first I started by copying the designs that they had created because I was new at it and didn't know what else to do. After a while I began to put together my own outfits and gain confidence as well as practice in my drawings. Copying the drawings became easier too and my hand became steadier.
I have now started steering away from the patterns and started to hand draw my own unique designs (shown above).
I will show you the designs I have already done. So far I have done 46 designs. I figure that's too many to show in one post. So I've decided to show you two every....day? week? I don't know, I'll see how I go. I really want to just show them all to you now but I don't want to run out of fashions to show you too quickly. Of course I'll keep making them and posting them but I think it would be a nice weekly task to take on.
A blue circle means the drawing is partially original. This means I've copied some of it or most of it from the book but added my own touch somewhere (e.g. different shoes).
A yellow star means the drawing has been completely copied and no part of it was of my own creative initiative.
A red heart means it's one of my favourites. I have a lot of favourites which I have not put a red heart because I've either forgotten about it or if I'm not sure if it deserves to be in the top favourites.

So here are 3 today:

I will show you 2 more next weekend. I will call this ongoing series "Fashion Fun".
Also I ordered an extras kit from the Klutz website. Unfortunately it has to be shipped from America and the shipping costs almost as much as the product itself so that is very unfortunate but it didn't stop me from buying it ;D

While pinning on the very useful Pinterest I found this blog which even though I haven't found many pins I find particularly inspiring, I find the blog itself a little inspiring and also that it's is run by a young student (like myself I suppose - except she is a much better blogger) which you don't see many of these days I'm afraid. They seem to all be run by young women or mothers :) Which is fine of course.
Oh so here's the blog: http://yourstrulyg.com/

Nine-tailed fox

Wow, I haven't written a blog entry for ages. Sorry about that, I keep forgetting.

Well lets start with; last week I did my art assignment on mythological gods. We had the usual 3 part assignment; 2 theory, 1 practical. So anyway I knew it had to be on mythological gods/creatures/fables etc, etc. So since I love foxes (as you may have guessed) I decided to do mine of the Asian myth, the nine-tailed fox. I think it was originally Chinese but there are Japanese versions too. What I find interesting is that while in European culture, the fox is represented as cunning, clever, resourceful, sneaky, manipulative, deceitful and a trickster; the nine-tailed fox in ancient Chinese culture has been symbolised very differently. One version says that the nine-tailed fox can be eaten by humans, and those who eat it will be protected from evil. Another story depicts the nine-tailed fox as a beast of fortune. Sent by the heavens, the nine-tailed fox was seen as a sign of fortune, peace and luck. In the Han dynasty, it is the protector of royal blood. However, it can also represent an omen of revolution when the Emperor is not good (taken from Wikipedia). Anyway when I went to hand in my assignment I heard people saying "...did we have to put our face on it?..." And I thought, "what?" So I looked at the sheet and sure enough it said we had to draw our face on it just like the last fricken assignment. I didn't tell you about the last assignment did I? Well basically we had to draw a royal portrait of ourselves. So basically I drew some Queen of France's body and then drew my face on top. I got full marks for it but I hated it. And you can probably understand why, and if you can't, don't worry. Anyway I'm kind of glad I didn't read the instructions because there was no way I was going to draw another bloody portrait of myself especially not on a mythological god's body. I just hope I don't get marks deducted for that. I did put a lot of hard work and effort into it though so here it is:

On the weekend I had two parties; one for my cousin who turned 3, and one for my grandad who turned 70. I made a farm cake for my cousin

On Sunday we had so much food for my grandad's 70th. We got to take home tonnes of leftovers. Including a delicious veal tortellini.

This morning I couldn't find my phone and bus pass. I later discovered this afternoon that it was wedged into the side of my bed the whole time. I couldn't find it this morning because we have no home phone, my mum was at work, my dad was asleep so I couldn't unlock his phone to call mine. So that was my morning. Later this afternoon I was getting worried if the bus driver would let me on and if not I'd have to walk all the way to my grandmas and catch a ride home. I was thinking "I have no money, no phone and no bus pass....and no umbrella. Great..."

Thankfully, when I started saying "I'm really sorry I don't have my..." The bus driver said "It's alright you have nothing to worry about..." which was what I was hoping he'd say but sometimes they're really serious about it so that's why I was worried. The bus was unusually empty and by the time it got the last stop there were only about 9 people including myself. But it's all good, I got home and had a nice hot bowl of pumpkin and pesto ravioli (leftover from yesterdays party) and a few pieces (ok maybe more than a few) of Cadbury crunchie chocolate block. And now I am writing this all down to you.

Well thanks for listening if you did. I will update you if anything interesting happens in my life.
